The Activity Slides Collection 2
for teaching and provision
PRINT font version
The phase 3 sounds covered in these slides in this order are:
j, v, w, x, y, z, zz, qu, ch, sh, th (unvoiced), th (voiced), ng, nk, ck, ai, ee, igh, oa, ar, or, ur, oi, ear, ure, er, oo (long), oo (short), ow (as in cow), ow (as in snow), kn, air
Cumulative, structured learning is vital to high-quality phonics teaching so the slides have been designed to teach sounds in order to comply with government guidelines requiring “a clearly defined, incremental sequence” (April 2021). In the default order of these slides, children will not be expected to recognize and decode sounds they have not yet been taught. Also in line with government guidelines on tricky common exception words are the zigzags that note “the part of the word that makes it an exception word”.
You can still drag and drop the slides into any order that suits you.
There are 68 tricky words covered:
all year 1 common exception words
phase 3 and 4 tricky words
plus 2 and 3-letter high-frequency words
Each sound has a minimum of three activity slides covering real and alien words. Each activity slide has a corresponding answer slide for you to easily move between the activity and answer slides for both peer or self-correction in class. Slides where a creative response like drawing or original writing is required don’t have an answer as it will obviously be different for each child and there is no one “right” answer. The slides support valuable teaching routines that mean your learners get into the zone quickly because they know what to expect. And you have no-prep resources to hand.
The Trick slides featuring the tricky words (common exception and high-frequency words) are marked as “reading”, “spelling” or “spelling and reading” for easy identification of the skill to practise. The tricky words appear in different exercise types to give children repeated exposure to them for revision, reinforcement and overlearning.
Each slide has a corresponding printable version in black and white to be economical with your printing resources. The characters’ faces for assessment for learning feedback are in the top right hand corner of the printouts. If you have learners with higher reading needs, printing on off-white (to avoid glare) or other colours may make the printables easier for your learners to use.
There are 123 activities on 352 slides in total that you can drag and drop into the order that suits you.
You can use the slides for:
whatever else you need, including as inspiration to transfer the activity types to tuff trays and other setups for continuous provision
The slides are fully classroom tested. The activities provide opportunities to draw, sort, write and play games which have the bonus of developing important thinking skills. And all with Puzzle, Wug and Trick who are there to develop your children’s metacognitive awareness of real, alien and tricky words. The slides help manage your workload because they are a high-quality, classroom-tested resource requiring no preparation. Government guidelines (from April 2021) state “teaching and learning activities should be interesting and engaging but firmly focused on intensifying learning associated with the phonic goal. Where computer-based resources are included, these should support or direct teaching by the teacher, but not replace it.”
The Jigsaw PhonicsⓇ activity slides have been specifically designed to meet these criteria.
